Physical Education (PE)

Intent:

At Heytesbury C of E Primary School, we believe that Physical Education (PE), experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is essential to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. Our PE curriculum teaches children how to work independently as well as cooperatively and collaboratively as part of an effective team, whilst developing an understanding of fairness and equity of play. We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and develop and embed important life values and skills as they progress in their PE lessons through the school. Throughout their time with us, our children will experience a range of different sports and will learn to swim.

At Heytesbury, we follow ‘Complete PE’ which progresses children through a number of skills in different sports through each year group. Our lessons are adapted and tailored for the needs and abilities of our children. We want children to grow to love keeping active and understanding the importance of this and how it impacts other elements of their life. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children at Heytesbury, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Our PE curriculum supports the learning pathway to support the development of the whole child in each activity.

Implementation:

Our PE curriculum is tailored to support our range of learners that we have here at Heytesbury C of E Primary School. The long-term plan sets out the PE units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met for Early Years (starting with simple ball skills and locomotion activities etc.) right through to Year 6 (with more advanced invasion games and putting a sport into practise).

Pupils participate in two high quality PE lessons each week. One is taught by a sports leader provided by our trust. This allows the children to receive input from a specialist coach. The children then have an additional lesson taught by teaching staff.

We provide children the opportunity to attend extra curricular clubs. Children are also invited to attend competitive sporting events within our trust and West Wiltshire. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Each year we select a sports council/sports leaders to develop sporting role models for the younger children. We provide the opportunity for some year 6 children to become a Sports Young Ambassador which aims to empower and inspire young people to become leaders through sport, helping to encourage their inactive peers to become hooked on sport. The programme aims to recruit, train, deploy and celebrate the outstanding individuals who volunteer their time in sport.

In addition to PE lessons and clubs, we actively seek to provide our students with workshops to explore sports/activities that are not taught within our lessons by inviting in external companies/professionals. This widens their knowledge and chance to have a go at different sports.

Impact:

By the end of the PE curriculum at Heytesbury C of E Primary School, our children will be equipped with the physical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the secondary curriculum and for life as an adult in the wider world. We motivate children to participate in a variety of sports which are engaging and fun. We inspire children to instinctively utilise skills and knowledge acquired during PE lessons, encouraging them to take responsibility for their own health and fitness thus developing a love of sport leading to a happy and healthy life.

When our children leave us, they will have a better understanding of the importance of physical and emotional health and how sport and activity can support these areas.
